"SOCIAL" BETWEEN YOU AND ME

It all began during my college years, but the seeds of my passion for cultural diversity were sown back in Senior High School. Even then, my thoughts were captivated by the enchanting allure of Japan. So, when I received a task in college that involved exploring cultural communication, I saw it as an opportunity to delve deeper into this fascination. Little did I know that this endeavor would lead me to encounter a group of remarkable Japanese mothers dedicated to nurturing children's love for literature. Embarking on this journey, I found myself not alone but surrounded by a team of like-minded friends.

Initially, our primary goal was simply to complete our assignment. However, as we continued our adventure, something magical happened. We realized that this endeavor was not only enjoyable but also profoundly meaningful. It was then that I truly comprehended the significance of volunteering and community service, sensing an internal obligation as a citizen to contribute to the causes we care about. When we connect with a cause, when it resonates deeply within us, we discover the willingness to devote our time to its realization.

My experience with the Japan-Jakarta Network (J2Net) and Taman Baca Bulian exemplified this notion. Engaging in these activities, I learned that even the smallest gestures could bring immense joy to others. Immersing myself in the company of children, I sought to establish friendships with them, bridging gaps of language and culture. While such endeavors might pose challenges for some, I found them to be awe-inspiring, especially considering my natural inclination toward interacting with children.

The experience was nothing short of extraordinary. The smiles that adorned the faces of the children as I read them stories, the sparkle of curiosity in their eyes as they thirsted for knowledge and tales found within the pages of books—I knew then that I was making a difference. To think that I could bring happiness to the less fortunate children who lacked access to storybooks, allowing them a glimpse into the vast world of literature, warmed my heart immeasurably. It became clear that making a difference did not require me to travel to far-off lands; rather, I could engage in impactful activities within my own community, alongside these remarkable individuals. Witnessing firsthand how a little effort could go a long way truly amazed me.

In those moments, I discovered the immense power of cultural exchange, the profound impact that a shared love for literature and a genuine connection with others could have. These experiences became a part of me, shaping my perspective on life, and inspiring me to continue exploring avenues where my passion for cultural diversity and community service could intertwine.

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to have worked alongside the incredible Japanese mothers and my dedicated team. Together, we forged meaningful connections, bridging cultural divides, and illuminating the lives of those in need. This experience has reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of volunteering, and it will forever serve as a reminder that by dedicating our time and hearts to causes we care about, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of others, one smile, one story, at a time.
